Discovering the Secret Waterfall
Last year, I decided to revisit the Secret Waterfall. The air was crisp, and the sky painted with the soft hues of dawn as I set out from my cozy home in Ella. This time, I opted for a tuk-tuk ride to the trailhead, which is about 3 kilometers from the town center. My driver, a cheerful local named Nimal, chatted with me about the recent rains and how they had refreshed the forest.
How to Reach Secret Waterfall?
Reaching Secret Waterfall involves a bit of an adventure. From Ella, you can take a tuk-tuk or drive to the starting point of the hike, which is about 3 kilometers away. The trek itself is about 1 kilometer through the forest.
As I began my hike, the forest came alive with the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves. The path, though slightly rugged, is manageable for most people. The lush greenery around me was invigorating, and the scent of wet earth added to the experience. The hike takes about 30 minutes, but you may find yourself pausing to capture the beauty around you with your camera. I recommend wearing sturdy shoes and carrying a bottle of water.
What to Expect at Secret Waterfall?
Upon reaching the waterfall, I was greeted by the sight of water cascading down a rocky cliff into a pristine pool below. The Secret Waterfall, true to its name, feels like a hidden paradise. The clear, cool water looked inviting, especially after the hike. I quickly set down my backpack, took off my shoes, and dipped my feet into the refreshing water.
The water at Secret Waterfall is clear and clean, fed by mountain springs. The pool’s depth varies, allowing both novice and experienced swimmers to enjoy it. The pool at the base of the waterfall is about 10-15 feet deep in the center, making it perfect for swimming. I waded in slowly, savoring the coolness of the water against my skin. Swimming in this natural pool, surrounded by dense forest and the sound of cascading water, is a magical experience. I spent the next hour floating on my back, gazing up at the canopy of trees above, feeling completely at peace.
Sidenote: Always check for any strong currents or slippery rocks mainly during rainy months, but generally, it’s a safe spot for a dip.
Sitting on the rocks, enjoying a simple meal while listening to the waterfall, is pure bliss. It’s also a great time to catch up on some reading or jot down notes for my blog.
Best Time to Visit Secret Waterfall
To truly enjoy the serenity of the Secret Waterfall, I recommend visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon. These times are ideal to avoid the midday heat and the occasional crowd. The best months to visit are from January to April, during the dry season. The trails are easier to navigate, and the water levels are just right for a swim.

Exploring Ella
Ella is not just about the waterfall; it’s a treasure trove of natural and historical wonders. After my refreshing dip, I visited the nearby Nine Arches Bridge. This iconic railway bridge, surrounded by lush greenery, is a marvel of colonial engineering. Another favorite spot is the Dhowa Rock Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple with intricate carvings. These visits added a cultural depth to my trips, making each journey to the Secret Waterfall even more meaningful.
As a travel blogger, I always emphasize the importance of respecting nature. When visiting the Secret Waterfall, remember to carry out all your trash. Avoid using soaps or shampoos in the water to keep it clean. These small actions help preserve the natural beauty of the waterfall area for future visitors.
