Queen Victoria Park Nuwara Eliya

In the charming town of Nuwara Eliya, Victoria Park is a 27-acre haven that has been a popular destination for over a century. Once the research field of the renowned Hakgala Botanical Garden, it was transformed into a park in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s 60th year on the throne. Today, this beautiful park offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, providing a peaceful retreat for visitors to relax and unwind.

I  heard about good things about Victoria Park from when I was in school. I was so excited to see it for myself!

Though my first visit to Victoria Park was a soggy affair as I arrived during the heavy rain season, and the park’s lush greenery was shrouded in a misty veil. The flowers, usually a riot of color, were muted and subdued, and the sound of raindrops on the leaves created a melancholy melody. It was a far cry from the magical experience I was expecting.

But I was determined to give Victoria Park another chance. I returned on a sunny day in 2017.

I boarded the morning train from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya, the scenic journey filling me with excitement. By afternoon, I arrived in Sri Lank most beautiful hill town and took a refreshing break at my hotel. After two hours, I set off to explore the park in the early evening, eager to experience its magic firsthand.

Arriving at Queen Victoria Park

As I walked through the lush greenery of Victoria Park Nuwara Eliya in the early afternoon, I felt like I was in a fairy tale. The sweet smell of flowers filled the air. Children were playing, laughing, and having fun, and it made me smile.

The warm sun shone down on me, casting a golden glow over the park. I felt grateful to be surrounded by nature’s beauty. Suddenly, I heard the sound of children’s laughter and the chirping of birds. It was a peaceful and serene atmosphere.

But then, dark clouds appeared, and it started to rain. I had no umbrella and got soaked! I ran to a big tree to stay dry. The rain was cold, and I felt scared. But then, the rain stopped, and a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. It was like a reward for my patience.

As I stood under the tree, I felt a sense of wonder and awe at the beauty of nature. The rainbow was a reminder that even in the midst of rain and gloom, there is always something beautiful to be found.
